A long time ago, people of Orna believed nothing could stop them. Human ingenuity carried them to dizzying heights, but triumph came at a cost. While the population increased steadily with each year, Orna's resources thinned more and more. Eventually, nature itself seemed to rebel – earthquackes struck where none had before, volcanoes that were long asleep woke, hurricanes roamed the land... Whether curse or consequence, the disasters piled atop each other until scarcity turned to desperation, and desperation turned to war.
The Last War, as it was later dubbed by survivors, lasted for 39 years. By the time the guns fell silent, more than four-fifths of Ornans were lost to battle, catastrophes and famine. Those who remained stood among the wreckage of everything their ancestors had built, and found they no longer had the will to keep destroying each other. Survival became the only cause worth fighting for.
Scattered survivors reached toward one another, trading violence for alliance. Over time, their fragile truces hardened into lasting union, until the whole of Orna's remaining children bound themselves together as the Orna Federation – a single government spanning three continents, each its own federation in turn: Fortana, Concors, and Memoris. Where the Last War had torn the planet apart, the Federation stitched it back together, built not on the old dream of conquest, but on the harder-won belief that Ornans would only endure if they endured as one.
The nature seemed to give humans a second chance – "unnatural" disasters soon subsided, giving the new generation space to breathe out and collect itself.
A day on Orna lasts 26 hours. The year stretches to 480 days across 16 months of 30 days each, with long transitional phases between the four seasons. The calendar had been reset to Year 0 with the founding of the Orna Federation, and each new year begins in spring.
